Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The management of Ethiopian Airlines is planning to establish a new African carrier, which will serve south and central Africa, a senior executive of the airline told the English weekly The Reporter.

The executive said that the airline anticipates attracting potential investors such as South African Airways and Egypt Air, who would invest in the planned airline. However, the detail work plans have yet to be developed, the official confirmed.

Now scientists have for the first time been able to carry out a continent-wide analysis of the water that is hidden under the surface in aquifers. Researchers from the British Geological Survey and University College London (UCL) have mapped in detail the amount and potential yield of this groundwater resource across the continent.

Helen Bonsor from the BGS is one of the authors of the paper. She says that up until now groundwater was out of sight and out of mind. She hopes the new maps will open people's eyes to the potential.

World Economic Forum (WEF) to be hosted by Ethiopia soon would help showcase the renaissance of the nation and create market link to the business community.

In a joint conference they gave here on Friday in connection with WEF, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Ambassador Dina Mufti, Deputy Prime Minister Advisor, Prof. Mekonnen Hadis and Government Communication Affairs Office Head, Motuma Temesgen said the Forum is an opportunity to promote the image of Ethiopia.

Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Ambassadors’ forum in North America was held on Wednesday in Washington embassy, the ministry of foreign affairs said.

The forum discussed on pressing regional issues, according the ministry’s statement sent to ENA on Friday.
IGAD Secretary General Mahibub Malim briefed the forum the current situation and related issues in the region.

Ethiopian troops fighting al-Qaida-linked militants in neighboring Somalia will soon return home, Ethiopia's prime minister said Tuesday.

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said regions of Somalia currently controlled by Ethiopian forces will be handed over to troops from Burundi, Kenya, Djibouti and Rwanda. The first three countries have troops in Somalia as part of the African Union peacekeeping force. Rwanda does not currently have troops in Somalia.

The forum is organised by the African Development Bank (AfDB), International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the World Bank. The forum is also supported by the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Agency.

The Ministry of Industry said 193.5 million USD was secured from the manufacturing industry sector through export of products during the last nine months.
