Addis Ababa, June 2, 2010 (Addis Ababa) - Psalter of Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II returned home from the USA on Wednesday.
A philanthropist, Gerald Weiner, who kept the Psalter with him in the USA, agreed to return the prayer book of Menelik II after a renowned expert in Ethiopian Manuscripts, Prof. Getachew Haile initiated contact with him through his friend Prof. Stephen Delamarter.
Weiner is a collector of manuscripts.
Prof. Richard Pankhurst on the occasion made a call for the return of 600 books, which are kept in Britain.
Prof. Pankhurst said though the return of the Axum Obelisk is a great success, efforts should further be strengthened toward the return of heritages of Emperor Tewodros taken from Mekdala.
He said support should be provided to the ongoing efforts of AFROMET (Association For the Return Of the Makdala Ethiopian Treasures) to return the heritages.
"Book of Emperor Menelik" is inscribed at page 124 of the book, which includes traditional paintings.
Prof. Delamarter handed over the Psalter to Elizabeth Wolde Giorgis, Director, Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES), Addis Ababa University.
Emperor Menelik II ruled Ethiopia from 1889 until his death in 1913.
