Ethiopia Called Member States to Provide scholarships for students in HaitiWINDHOEK, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- Ethiopia called on member states to assist Haiti through financial, material and other means, including scholarships for students.

President Hifikepunye Pohamba announced this here recently during a gala dinner to raise funds for Haitian earthquake victims, after the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, the Namibian Press Agency (Nampa) said.

On Jan 12 this year, Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake killing more than 200 000 people and displacing millions.

Pohamba, who also attended the AU summit, said the African Union Commission has opened a bank account at the African Development Bank, through which donations can be channelled.

After learning about the shocking news of the disaster, the government of Namibia decided to lend a humanitarian hand of assistance to the brothers and sisters in Haiti during their time of need.

The Namibian government availed an amount of N.dollars 7 million (US$902,736) to assist in recovery efforts in that country.
