By Gubae Gundarta

Meqdela Development Association, in collaboration with ten pastries, launched a gigantic, 100 m tall cake at Meskel Square Sunday, 2 January 2011. The money obtained from the vending of the cake would go to a training funding for 250 youth, the association disclosed.

Founder and Manager of the development association, Tewodros Bacha, said on the occasion that he came up with the idea and worked hard for its implementation. A slice was sold at a price of 5 birr. With the money 250 young boys and girls, who live on the streets, dropped out of school owing to various problems, orphans and many shoeshine boys who just manage to keep body and soul together with the piddling amount of money the make from the business.

Cake New York, Laperazian, London, Sami, Five Zone, Yars, Raha, Cloud 9, Made and Denver Cafes have taken part by bringing in 10 m pieces of cake each.

“I have pitched in, what about you?” was the phrase of the occasion. The creative young man, Tewodros Bacha, was known for acting, organizing a cultural music concert, and memorial programs for the late Tilahun Gessesse. He expressed gratitude to BGI Ethiopia and other sponsors for making it all happen.
