H1N1 vaccination officially launched in Ethiopia
   
 
 
   
 
Addis Ababa, July 13, 2010 (Addis Ababa) - H1N1 (influenza) vaccination was launched officially here on Tuesday at the Gandi Memorial Hospital.

Speaking on the occasion, Health State Minister, Kebede Worku said the government of Ethiopia in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO) imported HIN1 vaccination.

Worku said three million people are expected to receive the vaccination.

He said the government of Ethiopia is giving due attention to control and prevent the H1N1 virus.

The vaccination will be given to risky groups like children, pregnant women, health professionals, school children, police and army members, air line and air port employees.

WHO Representatives to Ethiopia, Dr. Fatoumata Nafo-Traore on her part said WHO initially imported 1.5 million doses of H1N1 vaccine to for Ethiopia which is enough to vaccinate 2 percent of the population.

Another 1.5 million doses will be arriving in the country this week, she said.

She said in response to the threat, WHO with the support of its partners has donated 200 million doses to developing countries to mitigate the impact of the H1N1 pandemic.
