New York (TADIAS) — The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced the appointment of Haddis Tadesse as the foundation’s first official representative in Ethiopia. Ethiopian-born Haddis Tadesse, who has worked as an external relations officer for the foundation since 2007, will assume the new position later this month in Addis Ababa. “Tadesse, who grew up in Ethiopia and was educated in the United States, will serve as the foundation’s liaison to the federal government of Ethiopia and the African Union,” the organization said in a press release. “He also will help the foundation strengthen its relationships with health and development partners operating in Ethiopia, including donor agencies, international NGOs and local Ethiopian organizations.”

Saudi billionaire eyes $3.4bn Ethiopia projects Derba Group, an amalgam of three Ethiopian companies owned by Saudi billionaire Mohammed Al Amoudi, said it plans to invest 59bn birr ($3.4bn) in seven industrial projects over the next five years.

The company, formed last month, has already invested 12bn birr of a planned 71bn birr in agriculture and cement in the Horn of Africa country, CEO Haile Assegide said on Monday by phone from Derba Midroc Cement’s plant near Chancho, about 70km northwest of Addis Ababa, the capital.

Ethiopia exports up by 21 pct despite coffee slump ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - A surge in gold, oil seeds and livestock exports lifted Ethiopia's total export revenue by 21 percent in the six months to December versus the year-ago period, offsetting a slump in coffee earnings, trade data showed.

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told parliament last month he expected the country's economy to grow by more than 11 percent this fiscal year driven by a boost in agriculture production.

ADDIS ABABA, Feb 27 (BERNAMA-NNN-ENA) -- European aircraft manufacturer Airbus says it expects the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to become a mega city from the aviation perspective -- one which has more than 10,000 long-haul air passengers a day -- in the next 20 years.

According to an Airbus statement received here by the Ethiopian news Agency (ENA), there are currently 39 mega cities in the world, and the number would increase to 90 in the next 20 years. Addis Ababa was expected to join this group.
