In that modest two-room office off East 125th Street, the Abyssinian Fund, the only nongovernmental organization in Ethiopia formed by an African-American church, the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, finally has a home. Mr. Richards, 26, an assistant minister at Abyssinian under the Rev. Calvin O. Butts III, is the president of the recently formed Aby Fund, as he calls it, an international aid and development arm of the church. It will soon be joining forces with a co-op of 700 coffee farmers in the ancient Ethiopian city of Harrar, with a mission to improve the quality of the farmers’ lives by helping them improve the quality of their coffee beans. .... |

A child in Addis Ababa suffers from a heart defect. With surgery, it could be corrected. Brian deGuzman, a cardiac surgeon at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center in Phoenix, examined the boy during our recent visit. He was frustrated to learn that the child has been lingering on a waiting list for surgery at the heart hospital in Addis — despite the fact that there was no one on staff who had ever performed this specific surgery. He pledged to look into the possibility of a medical evacuation to the U.S. It would require a lot of financial support and it would have to happen quickly, or the child would die.
Another child at the Addis Ababa foster home we visited suffers from a seizure disorder. He is sweet, affectionate — a beautiful child of about 7. He is very attached to his Ethiopian caregivers. But his brain, his ability to learn and his social skills have been affected by his disease. He had an adoptive family, before the seizures started. Now he is in limbo. The deGuzmans have been following his case through emails and phone calls with the staff of Christian World Adoption. When they traveled to Addis to pick up their own two babies, they brought refills for a very expensive prescription that has helped somewhat in curbing this child’s seizures. They spent more than half an hour with the nurse at the foster home, discussing his symptoms and progress.

He also raised basic question for all Ethiopians, regardless their political, religious and language differences . In an exclusive interview with Hiber Radio, Las Vegas -based Amharic radio, artist Tamagne said that Ethiopians have no option, but to be unite and to get involve in common and national issues. In his view , for the past twenty years , Ethiopia experienced very tough times . He said: “Ethiopia has been ruled by wicked and embarrassing polices. Those leaders who are in power are also well known their awful statements .They insult and undermine their own people. So shouldn’t we say enough is enough? . How long should we live under such oppressive regime?. For the sake of Ethiopia, we should stop fighting each other with people whom we have small differences , instead we should focus on fighting against our common enemy. .... |
