“Democracy is Fair Play”, a film by Yared Shumete, has received the most vote as the best video film in the Democracy Video Challenge contest. The short film, which is about the Ethiopian traditional game of “More”, had been chosen as one of the top three films from Africa to compete in the challenge in the month of May 2010. And just end of last week, the Ethiopian film was chosen as the most viewed film making Yared Shumete the lucky winner.

“I heard that my film has won on Monday morning. Mr. Matt Endria, a movie buff who sponsored cameraman Tamirat Mekuria’s lesson in filmmaking, called me and told me my film has won.”
Democracy is Fair Play shows a children’s game in Ethiopia where two boys throw rocks towards a drawn line on the ground. Whoever gets the closest then climbs on the back of the other and will ride the loser to where the rocks are. Then the winner throws first and the carrier gets a chance to throw and hit the rock the boy on top has thrown. If he succeeds the roles will be reversed. As he finalizes the preparation of his songs that are scheduled to be released next week, The Reporter had a sneak peak. “Gurageton is a single that should have had lots of remixes, but I have not been asked to do a feature with other artists, except for Johnny Ragga.” Teddy Yo speaks how he has not managed to take the song further. “We have to mix our country’s beats with the West if we want to get international audience.” But despite not receiving any requests for a mixing, he has made a progress of his own. Teddy Yo has released a full hip hop album, Dimts Albaw Mesaria (silent weapon), Meringue Cha, and many more hits following his début single. But none of them has been a fusion of ethnic mix except Gurageton.

One of the major musical contributions to Gurageton is attributed to the music arranger FZ, and Teddy has used a new flavor in the latest fusion, Oromoton. The arrangement is attributed to a new music arranger, Kam Zu, and a new mixer by the name Peace. Ahmed Dimbi will feature on Oromoton.

"Maybe I didn't succeed in unifying the team and bringing it together."
Le Guen's appointment as Cameroon coach in July 2009 prompted celebrations in Yaounde and he was widely credited with turning around a World Cup qualification campaign which was in danger of going off the rails.

Latest News : Freedom of the Press: Media Non-partisanship Possible to Achieve in Ethiopia?

Independent media can be likened to a spick-and-span looking-glass. They reflect the reality in direct and impartial ways. Besides painting a clear picture of the status quo, they don’t only touch upon what has taken place in retrospective but also provide a prognosis of what the future holds. Genuine work of the media more often than not goes down in history as spectacular feat. Who can imagine the Watergate Scandal in the history of American politics without the involvement of the media?

Impartiality can be achieved if the media manage to drive clear of the influence of the government as well as other institutions and authorities and operate according to the journalistic principles of truthfulness, accuracy, and

Latest News : Ethiopia’s great thirst for water power threatens survival of tribes

‘It’s better to kill us first,” Olikoro says, naked apart from a piece of cloth slung over his shoulder. An AK 47 rests by his side as he stares at the Omo river and contemplates his stark, ruined future.

Olikoro, a man from the Mursi tribe, is talking about the Gibe III dam: the latest in a cascade of dams being built on the Omo river in south-west Ethiopia. The river begins its 500-mile journey in Ethiopia’s emerald highlands and drops through steep gorges to a sun-scorched valley before twisting towards the jewel of Lake Turkana in Kenya.

In Addis, Ethiopia’s capital, the dam is seen as essential for progress. But travelling along the river, deep into the Omo valley, one can see how the tribal people depend on the river – and how they dread the impact it will have on the lives of the half a million people.

Latest News : ONLF denied it has signed a peace deal with Ethiopian Government

The Ethiopian government claim that it had concluded a deal with a large ONLF faction is a self-serving blatant lie intended to mislead the international community. It is not the first time that Ethiopia used this cheap trick concerning agreements with ONLF. In 1995, it used few stooges to promote ‘a faction of ONLF that it claimed to have accepted the constitution and participated in the so called elections’ of that time. Recently, in her usual self-deception, Ethiopia was celebrating for signing peace agreement the defunct former Al-Itihad elements, but that does not change the situation on the ground.

The regime in Addis Ababa is so desperate to show that it has reached an agreement with ONLF in order to divert attention from its war crimes in the Ogaden and the daylight robbery of the Ethiopian peoples’ right to democracy and representative governance by stealing the election. Ethiopia, which has disenfranc...
